In chapters 4-10 we begin to see that Katniss knows she is truly in the games alone and that she can't depend on Peeta to be her friend because in just a few days they will be literally stabbing each other in the back to survive.  Page 92:" It's such a joke!  Peeta and I going along pretending to be friends!  Talking up each other's strengths, insisting the other take credit for their abilities.  Because, in fact, at some point, we're going to have to knock it off and accept we're bitter adversaries."   We also learn about the regret and sorry that Katniss is faced with when she sees that red headed Avox girl in the capital training center.  Katniss feels remorse for not trying to help the girl as she saw her running through the woods back home.  The girl was trying to escape the hovercraft from the capital that was chasing her, but Katniss and Gale just hid out of sight so they wouldn't be caught too.  Page 85:  " I'd set out to tell her I was sorry about dinner. But I know that my apology runs much deeper.  That I'm ashamed I never tried to help her in the woods."  The gamemakers bring out a side of Katniss that hasn't been seen in the earlier parts of the book.  As she goes before them to show off the skills that she has only a handful are paying her any attention.  The others are stuffing themselves with food and drunk on wine.  Katniss is so overtaken by anger at the fact that her life is in the hands of these people and they don't even have enough respect to watch the talent that she has.  Out of anger Katniss raises her bow and arrow and shoots the apple right out of the pigs mouth that the gamemakers are feasting on.  Page 101-102:  " Suddenly I am furious, that with my life on the line, they don't even have the decency to pay attention to me...Everyone stares at me with disbelief."

The most interesting thing that we learn about Peeta in this section comes out during his interview.  Peeta admits to the interviewer that he is in love with Katniss.  Page" Well, there is one girl.  I've had a crush on her as long as I can remember.  But I'm pretty sure she didn't know I was alive until the reaping... she came here with me."  This was not really a surprise to me however, because i felt that there was quiet a bit of foreshadowing leading up to this moment. One of the pieces that I felt foreshadowed this moment was when Peeta gave Katniss the burnt bread many years ago when she was starving.  Even though he knew he would be punished himself for his act of kindness Peeta was willing to take the risk.  Another event that foreshadowed this announcement was shown by the way that Peeta held on to Katniss' hand so tightly while they entered the capital for the first time, page 71 "I look down at our linked fingers as I loosen my grasp, but he regains his grip on me.  "No, don't let go of me," he says"  also was a clue to me that he had stronger feelings for Katniss than anyone knew about.  This section of the book still portrays Peeta as being loyal to Katniss and the friendship that they have.  Even though they start to pull away from each other because they know that every boy and girl will be fighting only for him/herself in the arena Peeta still is kind to Katniss.  When she pushed him into the glass vase causing to break and stab into his hands he didn't get angry with her.  Page 134:  The urn tips and shatters into hundreds of tiny pieces.  Peeta lands in the shards, and blood immediatley flows from his hands...I'm embarrassed about my reaction. I force myself to acknowledge Peeta.  " I'm sorry I shoved you." " Doesn't matter", he shrugs."

In these chapters we learn that the capitol is a very wealthy place to live and that the people who live in the capitol are very different from those from district 12.  Page 63:  "Most of the stylist they interview on television are so dyed, stenciled, and surgically altered they're grotesque."  Page 75: " The shower alone has a panel with more than a hundred options you can choose regulating water temperature, pressure, soaps, shampoos, scents, oils, and massaging sponges."  The capital just sees the games as a big party or festival.  They don't seem to take in the fact that 23 lives will be lost in the process of fining a winner.  The games are a big deal and a call for celebration.  Page 71:The twelve chariots fill the loop of the City Circle.  On the buildings that surround the Circle, every window is packed with the most prestigious citizens of the Capital."  The people that live in the capital have a much easier life than the citizens of the other districts.  Especially district 12.

Question 1- What do you learn about the setting- this world the author gives us?
The setting of the Hunger Games is very depressing.  The people who live in district 12 are divided by their social class and the amount of money and food that they have.  Page 30: "He was my year, but I didn't know his name.  He stuck with the town kids, so how would I?" It appears through the text that they whole town except for the square is dark and lifeless, page 16: "It's too bad, really that they hold the reaping in the square- one of the few places in District 12 that can be pleasant... especially if there's good weather, it has a holiday feel to it."  The exact opposite feeling is given when Katniss describes the Hob.  The Hob is the symbol of poverty and this is shown through her saying that, page 11: "No one in the Seam would turn up their nose at a good leg of wild dog, but the Peacekeepers who come to the Hob can afford to be a little choosier."  Katniss and Gale are forces to go to the Hob and sale whatever they can of the game, fruits, and greens they have gathered to those of the wealthier class who are not willing to go out into the woods themselves and risk breaking the law to get the goods that they want.  So therefore they depend on the lower class  to do the dirty work for them and in return the lower class can earn a small profit from their work.  The government has strict control over all of the people that live in District 12, page 4: " enclosing all of District 12, is a high chain-link fence topped with barbed-wire loops... suppost to be electrified 24 hours a day."  This to me sounds like a modern day prison.  The fence is said to keep the preditors out but to me it seems more like it is there to keep the citizens inside the district.

Question 2- What do you learn about Katniss?  What is she like?  What are her character traits?
Katniss is a quiet, shy 16 year old girl.  Page 12: Since neither of us really has a group of friends, we seem to end up together a lot at school."  This shows that Katniss is a reserved person who really doesn't have much to do with her classmates.  Gale is the only one true friend that she has.  Katniss has a hard time trusting people, page10- " It took us a long time for us to even become friends, to stop haggling over every trade and begin helping each other out."  She has been let down a lot by her mother and has had to become strong mother figure that Prim needed in her life.  Page 35-"You can't clock out and leave Prim on her own.  There's no me now to keep you both alive."  Katniss has become hostile toward her mother because Prim is the most important thing in the world to her and she can stand the thought of something bad happening to her. Katniss is a very brave and caring big sister to devote her whole life to caring for her sister and mother.  When Prim is called to be the new tribute Katniss volunteers to take her place.  Even though she knows it is probably her death sentence she is willing to take her little sisters place.

Visit to the IMC!

After visiting the Instructional Material Center in the basement of Belk Library I feel very good about the assignments that we will be completing this semester.  The IMC has a large section of picture books as well as chapter books that I will be able to use to complete my reader response logs.  In the picture book section of the library there are also big story books that can be used in classrooms of younger children.   The IMC also houses a section of bibliography and informational books that will be very helpful in doing our author project.  One section of books in the library is totally devoted to books which are Caldecott Medal winners.  These books are not allowed to leave the library, therefore they will always be available for me to go into the library and use.  On the top of the picture book shelves there are racks that have informational sheets about the different types of literature that we will be studying such as a list of Caldecott and Newbery Medal winners as well as book list for the different genres that we will be studying such as traditional literature, science fiction, poetry books for children, and modern fantasy.  All of the books on these list are available in the IMC for the use of education students.  The IMC also has a section of textbooks and classroom resources that can help students to find activities for lesson plans or projects that we are working on.  To help us education students when we are making projects or activities for a classroom the Idea Factory is open for students to use the equipment inside it to create crafts, and posters, ect. for our  classes.
